Devin Bester of Hillsboro High School Named 2021 Recipient of Jim Barrom Spirit Award
The Jim Barrom Spirit Award is presented to a student athlete who exemplifies the highest qualities of sportsmanship. The award is named in honor of the late Jim Barrom, a successful high school coach in the 70s, who later became a highly successful business leader in the financial and insurance fields. He also supported both the Belmont and Middle Tennessee State University athletic programs and this chapter.
The Jim Barrom Spirit Award recipient is Devin Bester from Hillsboro High School. Bester was a three-year starter on the offensive and defensive lines for the Burros. He was selected by The Tennessean as a “Top area high school offensive lineman going into the 2021 season,” who went on to make the All-Region 5-5A first team for the second straight season. He also was a finalist for the Hume Award, which recognizes the most outstanding Metro Nashville high school football player based on scholarship, sportsmanship, individual performance, and value to the team.
Bester also was a four-year letterman on Hillsboro’s lacrosse team, which won the 2021 state championship. He made The Tennessean All-Midstate first team as a senior. As outstanding as he was on the football and lacrosse fields Bester was even more impressive in the classroom. He carried a 5.0 grade point average in the school’s rigorous International Baccalaureate program. Coach Anthony Brown said Bester was the type of young man any parent would want their daughter to bring home to meet them. Brown also said he had never met a young man more dedicated to his academics and athletics than Bester and that God has ordained him for greatness.
